Taste and Tour at Starr Hill Brewery Grand Opening
Reported by Jenn McDaniel July 19, 2007
Beer drinkers will soon be able to enjoy a local cold one in the middle of wine country. The Starr Hill Brewery in Crozet is opening its doors, and bottles, to let you in for a taste and tour.
People at Starr Hill Brewery are geared up and ready to tap for this weekend's grand opening. What may be a surprise to some is the cooperation that's going on between the beer maker and wineries.
Both Starr Hill and King Family Vineyards are already working together to cross-promote. They are displaying each other's brochures and are open to the idea of sending people who visit them to the other place in order to try something new.
Starr Hill says they are following in the footsteps of the wineries, hoping to see the same success. Beer and wine fanatics both agree that getting your hands on Virginia goods is a good thing for sales.
Master brewer Mark Thompson says, "When they can come out here and see the facility, and touch it and feel it, they get a very viseral, very gut reaction that this is a good thing."
"Whether it's Virginia beer, Virginia wine, the best way to expose people to it is to give them the opportunity to actually sample it, learn about the process," insisted Kerry Hannon with the King Family Vineyards.
The master brewer says letting people inside is going to allow them to really experience Virginia beer. You will see the whole process on the tour. From the bags of barley that are at the heart of the beer making operation - to the finishing touches on the bottling line.
The big kick-off at Starr Hill is set for Saturday, July 21. After that, the brewery will be open every saturday from noon until 5 p.m. Tasting and tours are free.
