The for sale sign is going up on some prime real estate owned by the city of Charlottesville. City Council is now taking proposals to redevelop a public parking lot located on Water Street.
The lot is where the City Market is currently housed. Council says the plan must be a mixed-use development that has spots for 115 market vendors and at least 102 public parking spots.
"I would like to think it's possible. This is really letting the market see if it is possible. I'm not a developer. I can't really say what the market bears and what's possible. I think that the fact some people who are developers said it was, bodes well," said Kristin Szakos, city councilor.
The other option for council is to move City Market to a site on Garrett Street - or just keep it in the Water Street parking lot.
The deadline for the private proposals is March 1, 2014.
