Women's Committee Presents Check to Martha Jefferson

Posted: Updated:

The Martha Jefferson Hospital Women's Committee is celebrating 20 years of community action. Wednesday, the committee presented the money it raised from the 2012 Martha's Market  and the In the Pink Tennis Tournament to the hospital.

Martha's Market, an annual event hosted at John Paul Jones Arena, brings boutiques from across the county together to form one large marketplace. The In The Pink Tennis Tournament benefits Marianne's Room at Martha Jefferson, which provides free wigs, hats and scarves for women going through chemotherapy.

The check for $425,728 will help provide free mammograms and other women's health services.

The founder of the women's committee, Katya Spicuzza, says the community feedback has been phenomenal.

"You know, they can't talk to you without tears coming down their face. We have saved lives and those that we have not saved we've made a difference in their lives.  These women can have a mammogram done and don't have to worry about their insurance," said Spicuzza.
