UVA Children's Hospital Fundraiser for New Battle Building

Saturday night was more than a fundraiser – it was a celebration of what the vice president of the University of Virginia Medical Center calls a 30-year dream for Charlottesville.

Hundreds of people were at Keswick Hall Saturday night for the UVA Children's Hospital main event. The fundraising gala supports the construction of the new Battle Building opening next year.

A large architectural model of the Battle Building was on display to give guests an up close look at the soon-to-be finished outpatient center on West Main Street. The new children's hospital will offer a place for siblings to go while their brother or sister receives care. The idea is to make the hospital a comfortable place for the entire family - not just the patient.

"Everything a child can need in the way of health care will be under one roof, everything the family needs to support siblings, to support the parents will be there as well," said Ed Howell, vice president of the UVA Medical Center.

"It's a way to bring together lots of different specialties and different services for the kids in a very, very efficient, very pleasant family centered and child-centered environment," said James Nataro, M.D., chair member of the Department of Pediatrics.

The new Battle Building will have a licensed school inside so that children there for an extended amount of time can stay on top of their studies.

UVA still needs to raise $8 million toward the Battle Building project. Fundraisers set a goal of $250,000 to bring in at Saturday night's gala. The building will open its doors spring of 2014.
