Dannika Lewis joined the NBC29 news team as a general assignment reporter in June 2010.
Dannika started her ventures in broadcast news at Elon University where she graduated with a bachelor's degree in Broadcast Journalism and minors in Spanish and Leisure and Sport Management. She is a proud alumnus of Phoenix14 News at Elon and was fortunate to intern at WMAR-TV in Baltimore and CBS Evening News with Katie Couric in New York City. She also served as the first foreign correspondent for her college newscast while studying abroad in Madrid, Spain.
Originally from Maryland, Dannika loves the Orioles, a good bushel of steamed crabs and her big German Sheppard living with her parents and sister at home.
When she's not reporting the news that matters most to WVIR-TV viewers, Dannika enjoys doing anything outdoors, traveling and hanging out with friends and family. She couldn't have asked for a better place than Charlottesville to start her career in news!
If you want to contact Dannika, you can e-mail her anytime with a story idea or a quick note. Keep watching!
First TV Appearance: Thinking I wanted to be the next ESPN star, I did a piece on homecoming football my freshman year at Elon.
Favorite Story: I worked with a school in Greensboro that taught only refugee and immigrant children. It was so awesome to absorb the energy and culture of those kids while working with them.
Dream Job: I would love to be back in New York City someday reporting or producing. The less realistic option is to be a NCAA Division 1 men's basketball coach.
Most rewarding part of your job: Knowing that I got a story out there that wouldn't have been told otherwise. That is the best feeling.
Personal Philosophy: Real is better than perfect. I strive to be authentic in everything I do.
Why I'm A Journalist: I genuinely love meeting people I never would have met, doing things I never would have done and getting excited to tell stories every day.
Role Model: My grandmother. She watches over me everyday and reminds me to smile.
Alma Mater: Elon University (GO PHOENIX!!!)
Hidden Talent: I was a group exercise instructor in college, so I can lead my fair share of cycle classes. I also love and miss singing so much!
Hobbies: Anything outside, singing, dancing (not well, but it's still fun), hanging out with the people I love, cooking and anything Snoopy
Favorite TV Show: I LOVE Amazing Race! My sister and I have a pact to go on the show together.
Favorite Food: Anything chocolate! I could also eat sushi everyday.
Favorite Musician: It depends on what genre of music, but I think Alicia Keys is amazing! I've seen her in concert twice and it is an unmatched performance.
Favorite Book: A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini. If you haven't read it, do it!
Favorite Vacation Spot: I used to go camping in the middle of nowhere in Ontario, Canada, every single summer with my family and our friends. No running water, no electricity… but enough kayaking, fishing and swimming to be the best trips ever!
