One corner of Staunton is traveling back in time to offer kids some real-life lessons. The event is the week-long history camp at the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library.
This year it transports students to the turn of the 20th century. They re-enacted the Klondike Gold Rush by panning for nuggets, protecting their gold from robbers, and then spending it on snacks and drinks at a dance hall.
"The Klondike Gold Rush was a huge event," explained the library's Ellen Abernethy. "People were starving to death, there was a depression going on. When that boat arrived in San Francisco with that old prospector saying, ‘I found gold in the Klondike,' that was the answer to everybody. They could go and strike it rich and their problems would be over."
About two-dozen kids are taking part in the Wilson History Camp. It runs again next month, and sign-ups are still open.
