Independent Jeff Clark has officially qualified for the November ballot as a candidate in Virginia's 5th District. Clark will be running against incumbent Democrat Tom Perriello and Republican nominee Robert Hurt.
Clark, a businessman from Danville, filed more than 2500 signatures on petitions to get on the ballot. Wednesday morning, the state certified that over 1000 of them were registered voters, which made Clark's candidacy official.
Clark calls himself a "true conservative" and a "Tea Party" member. Analysts believe his candidacy could siphon votes from Hurt, who faced attacks from six other Republicans during the primary. Five of his six primary challengers have endorsed Hurt, but second place finisher, Jim McKelvey, has not.
