The president whose words and actions helped create Veterans Day brought that pivotal moment in history to life in Staunton.
Woodrow Wilson addressed congress 91 years ago, announcing the end of hostilities in World War I.
Staunton businessman Judd Bankert offered a re-enactment of that speech to visitors at the presidential library in Staunton.
Wilson sent two million Americans into what was known as the great war, and the decision was a deeply troubling one.
Bankert, as Woodrow Wilson, said, ”It was not only sending our boys over, and the suffering that they would have, but the suffering of the whole world caused by these conflicts. That was why I struggled for two and a half years, trying to keep America out of the war.”
November 11th was known as Armistice Day until the 1950s, when it became Veterans Day to honor those who fought in every war.
