EPA to release Chesapeake draft strategy Monday

Associated Press - November 9, 2009 4:15 AM ET

BALTIMORE (AP) - The Environmental Protection Agency is expected to release its draft strategy for restoring the Chesapeake Bay on Monday.

Last week, the federal agency gave bay watershed states its expectations of what is needed to restore the nation's largest estuary. The EPA said controls should be in place by 2017 to meet about 60 percent of pollution reduction goals, which should be fully met by 2025.

Earlier this year, President Obama ordered federal agencies to develop the strategy, putting the federal government in charge of efforts previously led by the states.

Recommendations in draft reports include expanded regulation of large-scale animal farms and municipal stormwater runoff, and requirements that pollution increases be offset by reductions elsewhere.
