A film called "Virginia Creepers" will be screened at the Virginia Film Festival this weekend. It's a documentary about the cultural phenomenon of hosting horror shows in the state and it includes NBC29's own part in the story.
WVIR came on the air in the 1970's, one of the first shows was slime theatre, hosted by Howard Meagle. Stations would fill air time with horror movies, but it was the personalities who stole the show.
Virginia Creepers producer Sean Kotz says, "Hosts would come on and show horror and science fiction movies and in the middle of the breaks, they would have breaks and cut up or make commentary about the movie."
The horror hosting was more about making people laugh instead of thrilling them.
Virginia Creepers will be screened November 7th at 2:30 at vinegar hill.
Tickets are $6.50.
