Most Heated Delegate Races in a Decade

Posted: Updated:

The 100 House of Delegates races this fall are shaping up to be the most competitive in more than a decade. Political analysts say that's a sign that democracy is working well.

"That's good for the public, it's good for Virginia," said Bob Holsworth, a political analyst who writes the blog VirginiaTomorrow.com.

Republicans currently hold a six-seat majority in the House and Democrats want to change that.

"The Democrats hope that they may find some way to wrest control from the GOP," Holsworth said.

State Democrats hope to do that by targeting specific Republicans, including Albemarle County Del. Rob Bell (R-57th District). He faces Cynthia Neff, a former IBM executive who's already raised tens of thousands of dollars for her campaign.

Democrats are also targeting Fairfax Del. Dave Albo (R-42nd District), who chairs the powerful Courts of Justice Committee. Challenger Greg Werkheiser lost a bitter battle to Albo in 2005 and is back for a well-funded rematch.

Another high-profile contest is in Hampton Roads. Del. Phil Hamilton often plays a significant role in budget negotiations, and for this first time in 10 years, Democrats have found someone to challenge him. Robin Abbott is hitting the Newport News district hard.

But despite those efforts, Holsworth says Democrats need a very strong showing to reach their goal in November.

"They almost have to run the table," he said. "They have to win almost every contested seat."
