Horses Seized from Waynesboro Farm

Posted: Updated: March 17, 2009 09:54 PM EDT

Waynesboro police raided the farm Tuesday where allegations have piled up about abused horses left to die. Several times over several years, neighbors called police to the Baylor Avenue Farm of Tory Allen Garrett. They never found evidence of criminal neglect until Tuesday.

Acting on a search warrant, Waynesboro police seized three dozen horses, ponies and donkeys. Officers got the warrant last week when a horse died soon after being purchased from Garrett.

A veterinarian says all of the animals on the property were malnourished, and some showed signs of skin diseases or parasites.

"They look good because they're fuzzy. But if you touch them under the hair, they're just bones....and extremely thin. So under Virginia statute, what we're looking at is animals that could potentially die," stated agricultural veterinarian Charlotte Robinson.

Garrett arrived at his farm Tuesday afternoon to find his horses being loaded into trailers. He'll have a chance to plead his case before a judge later this month. A thorough exam of the rescued horses will determine what criminal charges are filed.

The Augusta Regional SPCA is caring for the animals click here if you'd like to help or call 540-885-SPCA to donate supplies for rescued horses.
