C'ville, Albemarle Fail to Make AYP Grade

Posted: Updated:

The most recent Standards of Learning test results are in. They aren't necessarily what Albemarle and Charlottesville public school officials would like to see.

The schools have been held to the state standards since the federal No Child Left Behind Act was passed in 2001. Now, many schools are still failing to perform at the levels the state says are necessary. Albemarle and Charlottesville both failed to meet Adequate Yearly Progress, or AYP, standards.  The AYP results for a school division are separate from the AYP results for individual schools. Just because a school fails does not mean its division will automatically fail, too.

"We want every child achieving at high levels, but how you get there and the time it takes to get there may be different for different groups of students," stated Charlottesville Public Schools Assistant Superintendent Gertrude Ivory.

In Charlottesville, Burnley Moran, Walker and Buford all missed the mark. The same was true in Albemarle, with all six of its failing schools being elementary or middle schools, too. (See the summary below for a list of all the schools' AYP status or click here to see how your school fared).

"I'm not sure that there's a reason we have some challenges at the elementary and middle school level.  One of the things we try to do is make sure kids are well prepared to go into our high schools," said Albemarle County Public Schools Assistant Superintendent Bruce Benson.

The good news is both divisions have made overall progress the past three years. Charlottesville has seen a significant jump in English and math. Albemarle County is steadily increasing across all performance groups.

For the future, Benson assures, "We're going to help every kid in this division achieve...at not just an expected level, but a level beyond that."

"I think our awareness needs to be up. Our consciousness level needs to be raised to say, 'hey, we need to be paying better attention to what we're doing," said Ivory.

As a division, Augusta County passed AYP. Out of their 21 schools only Riverheads Elementary and Beverly Manor Middle School did not pass.
